11.8. and refrain

1
How solemn the question: with me is it well?
Am I saved by God’s grace from my sin?
Are my steps now directed to heaven or hell?
Let me search for the answer within.
Is it well with my soul?

2
If the world holds my heart, though its happiness seem
For a time all my longings to fill,
’Tis but a vain shadow, a vanishing dream;
With my soul thus ensnared – it is ill.
Is it well with my soul?

3
If Jesus I know not, no hope can I have,
He alone gives salvation to men,
He alone the lost sinner can cleanse and can save,
By the work of His Spirit within.
Is it well with my soul?

4
Lord, grant us the witness Thy Spirit imparts,
Thou alone canst our destiny tell.
O answer this question in each of our hearts,
“Is it well with my soul?” – “It is well.”
Is it well with my soul?
