1
If godly fear the work begins,
The truth must plainly be,
If I have unrepented sins,
No wisdom’s yet in me.
2
If wisdom’s work is not begun,
The truth is still as plain,
Folly and sin my heart o’errun,
And Satan there must reign.
3
Should this now be my present state,
I am not fit for heaven,
I’m one of those whose sins, as yet,
The Lord has not forgiven.
4
Great God, engrave Thy holy fear,
And wisdom’s work begin,
Lest I should sport with truths I hear,
And perish in my sin.
